An ecommerce accessibility audit done by hand, against WCAG 2.2.
The European Accessibility Act covers ecommerce, and that means your store. We test the whole purchase path against WCAG 2.2 AA by hand, with engineers who read your code. If you want, we ship the fixes too. No overlay widgets, ever.
Symptoms
What we get called about.
- The EAA deadline is close and nobody knows where the store stands
- You paid for an overlay widget. The demand letter arrived anyway
- Tab does nothing on the product variation picker
- Checkout rejects the card and the screen reader says nothing
- Keyboard focus goes into the mega-menu and never comes out
- Text overlaps at 200% zoom, and the layout breaks at 320px
What we do
We test the path to the order button, not the homepage.
An ecommerce accessibility audit is only worth anything if it covers the path people take to pay you. A scanner catches a fraction of what fails. It won’t tell you your variation picker is a stack of clickable <div>s, that the checkout error summary never takes focus, or that Tab gets stuck in the mega-menu. So we do it by hand: keyboard only, screen reader on, 200% zoom, 320px wide, from the product listing through to the order confirmation.
We test the buying path
- Keyboard only, with focus you can actually see & follow
- A screen reader through listing → product → cart → checkout
- Form labels, error text & what gets announced
- Contrast, reflow at 320px, tap target sizes
You get a report, not a scan dump
- Each issue tied to the WCAG 2.2 AA criterion it fails
- Ordered by what blocks a sale, not by how many pages it touches
- Steps to reproduce, and where in the code to look
- Written so your developer and your lawyer both follow it
We can fix it in the code
- Real radios, checkboxes & selects behind pickers and filters
- Focus that behaves in menus, modals & drawers
- Checkout errors a screen reader reads out loud
- Changes in your own code, never an overlay widget
From the field
Support kept getting the same email: “I can’t select a size.” We reproduced it on the first pass. Keyboard and screen-reader users could not complete a purchase at all.
The size picker was built out of clickable <div>s with no roles, no labels and no focus management. Tab skipped straight past all of them. The chosen size was a CSS border and nothing else, so a screen reader had no idea anything was selected.
We rebuilt it as native radio groups with real labels and managed focus, styled to look exactly the same as before. The full checkout is now completable by keyboard and screen reader — and a regression test keeps it that way.
Questions
Ecommerce accessibility audit questions we get a lot.
What does an ecommerce accessibility audit cost?
We quote a fixed price after the free triage. Two things move it: how many unique templates you have, and how unusual your checkout is. We audit templates, not every page. Fixes are quoted separately, or handled on an ongoing plan from $1,950/month. See plans.
Does the European Accessibility Act apply to my store?
If you sell to consumers in the EU, probably yes. The European Accessibility Act names ecommerce services in its scope. We can tell you where your store stands technically. For what that means legally, talk to a lawyer. We’re engineers, not counsel.
We installed an accessibility overlay. Are we compliant?
No. An overlay is a script that paints over the page at load. Underneath, the markup is unchanged, and that markup is what a screen reader and an auditor actually read. Stores running overlays still get demand letters — we’ve been called in after exactly that.
How long does an audit take?
One to two weeks. Most of that is hands-on testing of each template: keyboard, screen reader, zoom, reflow. The rest is writing it up so a developer can open the report and start fixing.
Do you also fix what you find?
Yes. The same engineers who ran the audit can do the work: native controls, focus management, forms and error handling. Then we walk the flow again and confirm each criterion passes.
